Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is expected to step up his interest in Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso – but may face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United.
Alonso has emerged as a target for Arsenal, who have also been linked with a move for Real duo Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria.
Negotiations with the Spanish side are believed to be ongoing, with the Gunners desperate to make quality additions to their lineup before the transfer window closes on Monday.
SportsDirect News understands that United may yet complicate matters by stealing in with a bid of their own for Alonso.
The former Liverpool player would certainly be a controversial arrival at Old Trafford.
However, United manager David Moyes is believed to be considering moving for Alonso after having seen a £25 million bid for Ander Herrera knocked back by Athletic Bilbao.
Alonso, 31, is understood to be open to quitting Real, where he faces significant competition for a starting spot.
The Spanish club have bolstered the ranks of their already impressive midfield lineup with the arrival of Isco and Asier Illarramendi this summer.
