The Belgian, who has made 140 appearances and scored 15 goals in all competitions since arriving at the Emirates Stadium in the summer of 2009, has found himself very much out of favour over the past year, during which time Wenger has installed Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as his preferred central defensive pairing.

Despite deciding to stay at the club during the January transfer window, Vermaelen has reportedly told Wenger that he wants to move on at the end of the campaign. While denying that the 28-year-old has already agreed to join Napoli, Vermaelen’s agent Alex Kroes has said: ‘Thomas has told Wenger that he wants to leave Arsenal this summer.’

‘Are the stories (regarding Napoli) true? What you’ve read in the newspapers and on the internet is unfounded,’
‘Things that have been reported are not true, and I say this with full knowledge of the facts Some outlets are beginning to speculate, but that’s all it is – speculation. Now is not the time to talk.’
