Gibbs the saviour as Ramsey scores his six in record breaking victory
Morning Gooners.
"Arsene Wenger, we want you to stay..." Not a chant you would have heard at Arsenal last season but one which rung out as I left Stamford Bridge in January following our 2-1 defeat to the eventual Europa Cup winners.
And it wasn't meant with any sincerity... they were genuinely mocking our greatest ever manager. Oh how times have changed. Last night Chelsea have made a good start defending their Europa Cup by losing to Basel. Penny for the thoughts of Roman Abramovich on his decision to bring back the not so special one.
Anyway enough about them lot and their crisis (not won in four games, defeats in their last two). We had a very successful trip to France last night. One which saw us smuggle three points back across the English Channel.
After a pretty dire first half where we we unable to retain possession of the ball for any long periods or create many clear cut chances, the second half proved to be totally different.
And it was Kieran Gibbs who was our star man. First of all he was on the line to prevent a mix up between the otherwise excellent Per Mertesacker and Wojciech Szczesny. The big German swung his big right boot at the ball and failed to make any contact with the near post cross from Payet. The ball bounced up over Szxzesny and luckily the left back was on the line to prevent the ball going in.
Four minutes later down the other end Gibbs was creating our first goal of the evening. His cross found Theo Walcott at the back post which Morel failed to deal with the ball and Arsenal's best goal scorer last season opened his account for this season with a powerful right foot volley which wasn't going to be stopped.
We had to wait 20 minutes for the three points to be secure when Aaron Ramsey latched on to a loose ball, drove at the French side's defence from midfield and let fly with a right foot shot from just inside the penalty area. His effort was deflected past Mandanda in the Marseille goal and the Welshman had his sixth goal of the season.
Sadly we weren't able to keep a clean sheet as the referee wrongly adjudged Ramsey to have brought down the Marseille player. Jordan Ayew scored the spot kick.
Overall a very good night for The Arsenal. With Napoli winning against Dortmund in Italy, a win in next month's home tie with the Italians could put us clear from the rest of the teams in the group.
And the result also means our last ten away games have all been wins. A club record. It shows how great we've been on the road since losing the north London derby back in March.
