Arsenal and Manchester City’s hopes of securing Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas have received a boost, after Barcelona president Sandro Rosell ruled out a move for the goalkeeper.
The Premier League duo have been heavily linked with the Spanish international captain over the course of the last few weeks, with his future at the Bernabeu far from clear.
New boss Carlo Ancelotti is yet to be convinced by the 32-year-old, and has frequently dropped him to the bench in favour of Diego Lopez – something that also happened under Jose Mourinho last season.
This has alerted a number of clubs, with Barcelona, as well as Arsenal and City, believed to be keen.
The La Liga champions are preparing to lose current first choice stopper Victor Valdes next year, and are desperate to line up a suitable replacement.
But, Rosell says that a move for Casillas is not realistic given the rivalry between the two clubs.
“Casillas is the icon of Madrid. Seeing him play for Barcelona would be like Real Madrid buying Xavi,” he is quoted by The Express.
This news will come as a welcome boost to Manuel Pellegrini and Arsene Wenger, who are both keen on the experienced keeper.
