Wenger targeting a first Champions League trophy for Arsenal Tuesday 01 October 2013 Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted he wants to have on his CV a Champions League success, the Daily Telegraph has reported, as the long-serving manager seeks to deliver the Gunners’ first European Cup triumph. Wenger took Arsenal to the 2006 final, where they were beaten by Barcelona after playing much of the match with 10 men following the dismissal of Jens Lehmann, while Wenger went close to claiming the trophy with Monaco, a quarter-finalist in 1989 and a semi-finalist in 1994. Ahead of Arsenal’s group match with Napoli, Wenger has vowed to do his best to bring the trophy to the Emirates Stadium, but warned that this year the competition is more challenging than ever. “It’s something I miss,” Wenger said. “I will try to fight very hard…but you play against Barcelona, Bayern, Real Madrid - every year they are there with a chance. We would love to win it as it has never been done with this club and we have flirted with it a few times. “You always think: 'Let’s do it every year and one year it will go for you.’ Let’s hope it will be this year. The competition is higher than ever.” Wenger added that he felt holders Bayern Munich deserved to be the favourites for the tournament after adding Mario Gotze to the squad that beat Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley in May. But because of the nature of the competition after the group stage is complete, Wenger feels you cannot rule out any side still involved when the competition resumes after the winter transfer window. “It’s difficult to predict because it’s a cup after the group stage,” Wenger said. “After Christmas it’s about who is available, who is fit and who isn’t.
