Report: Arsenal Agree £6.1million Fee With Freiburg For Matthias Ginter

 
Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement with Bundesliga side Freiburg to sign young German defensive midfielder Matthias Ginter for a fee of around £6.1 million, according to reports in Metro.
The reports claim that the two clubs have agreed a fee in the region of £6 million and the player is expected in north London this week to undergo a medical and finalize personal terms.
Ginter has been under the microscope of Arsenal scouts for the past few months and has impressed them with his performances for his club for whom he was a regular first team starter last season. The Gunners had asked the Bundesliga side to name their price for the 19 year old, who has been converted from a central defender to a defensive midfielder, as long back as March ahead of a prospective summer deal.

The 19-year-old usually operates as a center-defender but is equally adept at the defensive midfield position. Ginter managed to make 21 appearances for Freiburg last season and scored 1 goal. The Germany under-21 international has gained a reputation as one of the most promising young players plying their trade in the Bundesliga.
Arsenal were earlier linked with Ginter when Francis Coquelin was loaned to Freiburg, so perhaps Arsenal took the opportunity to enquire about the 19-year-old during negotiations.
The German is comfortable in possession, and likes to play the ball out from midfield using short passes rather than playing longer balls, which would suit Wenger’s fluid style of football. His quick reactions and reading of the game help him intercept opposition passes regularly, but his tackling is a weakness, which could be exposed in the Premier League at his young age.
Ginter is also capable of playing in the defensive midfield position so I’m sure his versatility appeals to Wenger as the holding role is also an area that needs strengthened. His performance for the German Under-21 team was very good during the European Championships earlier this summer, where they narrowly lost to Spain in the semi-finals.
He could also learn much under the tutelage of the likes of Per Mertesacker, and can mature into an impressive defensive player. Clearly Ginter is very much one for the future but the Freiburg player has shown over the course of the past 18 months that he can make an instant impact in top tier football and if secured could well have a significant part to play in Arsenal’s first team set-up this season.
While a move for Ginter will be welcomed by fans, they are still crying out for some high-profile signings with Wenger having a reported £70million war chest to spend this summer.
