Real Madrid fans wanted Mesut Ozil to stay. It has also become clear that even the Madrid players wanted him to stay. Yet, Ozil was shown the door on the transfer deadline day, without any proper explanations.
Various theories have come across why Madrid chose to expel
him from the club. The obvious reason is that, the Los Blancos have an
avalanche of attacking midfielders at their disposal, and especially
with the arrivals of Isco and Gareth Bale someone had to make way in
order for the area to be less congested. Unfortunately, the axe fell on
the German international.
The financial implications of the transfer cannot be ruled
out either. Madrid bought Bale for a record transfer fee, and in order
to balance the books, they sold the 24-year-old for a huge amount of
money, which was actually Arsenal’s record transfer.
Still, that’s not enough to appease fans. First, there’s no
harm in keeping a world class player in the squad, and no big club in
the world sell their superstars, especially when the player himself
doesn’t want a move. Financial consideration is still a possibility, but
we all know that Madrid have their own style of doing business, and
they always have money to spend.
“Ozil was not a good professional. He was obsessed with women. He would go out at night with his mistresses and without sleep for hours and hours.”
Further, El Mundo also claimed that Ozil’s glamorous affair off the pitch (affair with Venezuelan model Aida Yespica) affected his performances on the pitch. Plus, Madrid were also annoyed with Ozil’s father / agent Mustafa, who had put pressure on the club for his son to be granted a pay rise.
It’s not the first time a club will bad mouth a departing player to appease the fans, and it’s not the last. However, given Ozil’s performances for Madrid, and given the high regard his teammates held him in, it’s clear that Ozil deserved a place at Madrid.
However, someone had to make space for Bale, and Ozil being a high-earner and one who would command the highest transfer fee out of himself, Di Maria, Benzema and Khedira – was the one shown the door.
