Ozil slammed for 'moving for the money'
Spanish press hit out at Real Madrid mercenary
Arsenal's club-record signing Mesut Ozil has been slammed by Spanish newspaper Marca in the wake of his deadline day switch to north London.
In a damning report on the German international's £42.4 million transfer, Marca - the unofficial mouthpiece of Real Madrid - claim Ozil was lured by higher wages at the Emirates and that all it took was one phone call from Arsene Wenger to convince the 24-year-old to "throw away three years at Real Madrid".
Most damning of all is the claim that Ozil values money over success and that a bigger paycheque is the real motivation behind his Emirates move.
The report reads:
"So let's get this straight: after three years in a Real Madrid shirt,
during which he was a fixture in the side and developed both on and off
the pitch, he was happy to throw all that away after one phone call?
Arsène Wenger must be quite the charmer!
"Let's call a spade a spade. It is a shame to say goodbye to any player of Ozil's calibre. But when a player (who, lest you forget, still had years to run on his contract) decides to leave a club like Real Madrid, that is down to him and his whims/emotional needs/unrest.
"Being lured by higher wages is human and understandable, even when your name is Mesut Ozil and you already earn a fortune."
The report is likely to enrage Arsenal officials after they pulled off something of a coup by luring Ozil to the Emirates on deadline day.
Ozil is widely regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders in world football and Marca's report is likely to be knocked back by Arsenal fans as nothing more than sour grapes.
