Is Giroud the new Van Persie?
Robin Van Persie was sorely missed by Arsenal last season. The striker who had carried the club the season before had left for arch-rivals Manchester United. The man brought in to replace him was Frenchman Olivier Giroud and despite a promising debut season he was unable to fill the chasm created by Van Persie’s departure. However, this season Giroud is in inspired form and can potentially fill the gaping void up front. you can see he’s not too far off being the favourite for the Golden Boot. There are promising signs that Giroud can step up, his blistering start to the season being the main contributing factor. Four goals in five games is a good indicator that Giroud has class. Like his predecessor, he’s a towering centre forward blessed with strength, aerial ability and a delicate touch.
When Van Persie was a Gunner he was blessed to have the skilled Cesc Fabregas alongside him. Frankly a striker is only as good as the service provided for him, and this was sorely missed last year at Arsenal with Jack Wilshere injured for most of the season and other players not stepping up. Now that Arsenal have signed Mr Assists himself Mesut Ozil, the service provided to Giroud should be second to none. This should fill every Arsenal fan with confidence that the big man will be able to score on a regular basis.
With the combination of a fully fit Wilshere, an in-form Aaron Ramsey, and the creative flair of Ozil, as well as his own natural ability, Giroud looks every bit capable of filling the big shoes of Robin Van Persie.
